Accounts for the farms, shops, cottages and trades up the Eden valley. Ellie and Tom come out to your kitchen table.
Rowan and Beck are two accountants above the bookshop on Market Street in Kirkby Stephen, working for farming families and the businesses round them from the Howgills down to the Eden since 2012.
Talk to Ellie or Tom Monday to Friday, and Thursdays until seven.
Which kind of place is yours?
Pick the kind of place you run. Behind each door is a short account of places like it up the valley, what a business of that kind pays, and which of us comes out to it.
-
Farms and family partnerships
Hill farms and the families who run them: the partnership return, the farming year, and Making Tax Digital walked through at the kitchen table rather than explained down the phone. What a farm like this pays, and who comes out to it -
Farm shops, holiday lets and what grew out of the farm
The shop in the old barn, the cottages in the yard, the contracting that pays for the quad: one family, one set of books, and a plain word on when it should become a company. What a business like this pays, and who looks after it -
Trades, sole traders and landlords
Joiners, plumbers, contractors and anyone with a house or two let out: Self Assessment in plain English, bookkeeping if you want it, and the first year of Making Tax Digital done without a fuss. What someone like you pays, and who looks after you
Places we already look after
Loosely in order from the Howgills down the Eden, these are the kinds of place on our books. We don't put a neighbour's yard on a website without asking, so none is named here. Ask at the mart or in the village and you will likely know one.

Who comes out to you
Ellie Rowan and Tom Beck are the practice. There is no front desk between you and them, and no junior who takes your call and passes it along.
If you would rather not post a year's records, one of them drives out and collects them. The accounts are gone through at your kitchen table, in plain English, with the questions answered there and then rather than in a letter a fortnight later.
Each client has one partner. The person who learns how your farm, shop or cottages actually work is the person who picks up the phone next year, and the year after that.
More about Ellie and TomA neighbour's word
Most people up here choose an accountant because someone they trust already uses them. Ninety-six people have left a word about Rowan and Beck on Google, and between them they rate the practice 4.9 out of 5.
We have not picked a few of them to print here. They read better where they were written, by people who run the kinds of place on this page and had no reason to be kind. And the upper Eden is a small place: ask at the mart, in the pub or at the school gate, and you will likely find someone you know who is already with us.
Three things you can hold us to
-
The fee is fixed, published and agreed in writing before we start.
What a business like yours pays is on this site, and it goes down in writing before any work begins.
-
Every client has a named partner.
Ellie or Tom, from the first visit on, and the same one when you ring the next year.
-
If we miss a filing deadline that was ours to meet, we pay the penalty.
Yours is the paperwork, ours is the date. If the date was ours and it is missed, the penalty is ours as well.

Already with someone else?
Switching is straightforward and we handle it. We deal with your old accountant directly, collect what we need, and pick up where they left off. You do not have to have the awkward conversation.
