Fees

What a business like yours pays, fixed for the year and written down before we start.

You came here for a number, so here is how we give one. Every fee at Rowan and Beck is fixed for the year, set out on paper before any work begins, and signed by you and by the partner who will do the work.

A hill farm with three partners and a cottage in the yard is not the same job as one house let in Kirkby Stephen, so the figures below are where each kind of place starts. Ellie or Tom confirms yours in writing before any work begins. Below is what each kind of place pays for, who comes out to it, and where the figure comes from.

Fees by kind of place

Four kinds of place, what the fixed fee covers for each, and the partner who looks after it. Each row leads back to the page about places like yours.

  • Farm and family partnership

The farm accounts, the partnership return and each partner's own Self Assessment, with Making Tax Digital set up for any partner it already reaches through their own trade or lettings. It does not cover partnership income yet; HMRC will set that date later.

    From £1,450 a year

Depends on the number of partners and whether the farm is VAT registered. Written down before we start.

  • Farm shop, holiday let or what grew out of the farm

Accounts for the shop, the cottages or the contracting alongside the farm's, VAT returns where you are registered, and payroll for seasonal staff if you have them.

    From £900 a year

Depends on how many strands the family runs and whether there is a payroll. Written down before we start.

  • Sole trader or landlord

Your Self Assessment return, the accounts for the trade or the rental, and the first year of Making Tax Digital done with you rather than left to you.

    From £320 a year

Depends on whether you want the bookkeeping done too, and how many properties there are. Written down before we start.

  • Limited company

The company's accounts and corporation tax return, the directors' own Self Assessment, and VAT and payroll where the company runs them.

    From £1,100 a year

Depends on the number of directors and whether VAT and payroll are part of it. Written down before we start.

Ellie or Tom, and a plain word on whether a company is right for you at all. When a business becomes a company

Describe your place to Ellie or Tom and the figure comes back to you in writing. Nothing is billed by the hour, and nothing is added later that you did not see first.

What is always included

Whatever kind of place you run, these come with the fee and never arrive on a separate bill.

  • Ringing your partner with a question

If you want to know whether to buy the trailer before or after the year end, you ring and ask. The call is part of looking after you, not an item on an invoice.

  • One named partner, year after year

Ellie or Tom. The person who learns how your place works is the person who answers next year.

  • Your records collected from the farm

If you would rather not post a year's paperwork, one of us drives out and picks it up, and goes through it with you at the kitchen table while we are there.

  • The switch from your old accountant

We write to them, collect what we need and pick up where they left off. It is part of getting started, not a charge for it.

  • The fee itself, in writing, before anything begins

You see the figure and what it covers on paper, and nothing starts until you have agreed it.

Agreed in writing before we start

After the first conversation, usually at your kitchen table, Ellie or Tom writes down what the year's work is, what it costs and when each piece is due. You read it, ask about anything that is not clear, and sign it. Only then does any work begin.

Places change shape. A cottage gets let out, a son comes into the partnership, the contracting grows into something that might be better as a company. When that happens we say so, put the change and any difference to the fee in writing, and agree it with you before the extra work is done. The year's figure is not revised quietly on the invoice.

If a filing deadline that was ours to meet is missed, we pay the penalty.

You give us the records when we have agreed you will, and from then on the date is our responsibility. If a return that was ours to send in goes in late, the fine from HM Revenue and Customs is paid by Rowan and Beck, not by you.
